A habitat to both man and animals, Meadow Lake is a strong foundation complete with parks and recreation. Largely undeveloped, this area is home to Dove Springs, Wagon Crossing, Silverstone, Franklin Park, Yarrabee Bend, Williamson Creek, Peppertree Park, Onion Creek Plantation, Kensington Park and Indian Hills. Though decidedly urban, this part of the city also contains a generous amount of open space, picturesque Onion Creek, and McKinney Falls State Park. Camping hiking, mountain biking, road biking, picnicking, fishing, and swimming are some of the more popular activities among the area. Full of prosperous wildlife, much to be observed and photographed includes white-tailed deer, raccoons, armadillos, squirrels, frogs, and numerous birds.
McKinney Falls State Park in Travis County, in south Austin, is a 744.4-acre park acquired in 1970 from a private donation and opened to the public in 1976. Just 13 miles from the capital, The Park allows visitors the opportunity to observe the preserved ruins of founder Thomas F. McKinney's homestead. In addition, The Park includes 84 campsites with water and electricity, walk-in water sites (200 yards in with a picnic table, a fire ring, a grill, and water in area); picnic sites. Also a hiking trail, approximately 3/4 miles long; 3.5 miles of paved trails; 4 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking, an interpretive center with an exhibit room and audiovisual room; a sponsored youth group camping area; a dining hall (capacity 75) may be rented for day use. There is also an amphitheater that seats 50 people.
Those living in the Kensington Park neighborhood enjoy spring-fed natural ponds that flow into Williamson Creek before reaching McKinne Falls. The area is also home to the Jimmy Clay & Roy Kizer Golf Courses, which are located adjacent to the state park and are part of the Williamson Creek.
Dove Springs pool is located near the recreation center and behind Widen Elementary, within easy walking distance of the basketball courts, tennis courts, a playscape, ball fields and a covered picnic area.
